Album: Science Fiction
Artist: Brand New
The rundown: Brand New’s fifth and final album is an emotionally exhausting masterpiece that encapsulates the band’s hugely influential career. Keeping with the themes of their previous work, the album deals with mental illness and existentialism. However, it is translated in a blunt and honest fashion that emphasises the maturity of the band. While Science Fiction is generally softer than previous albums, the heavier moments are more prominent, and the overall darkness of each track hits hard. Science Fiction took eight years to refine, and it paid off. It is quite possibly the band’s best work yet. If Brand New really is saying goodbye, then this is certainly the way to do it.
Favourite track: The haunting opening track, ‘Lit Me Up’.
