album of the day

Album: Kick

Artist: INXS

Year: 1987

The rundown: Kick, the album that cemented INXS as an internationally successful rock band, boasts hit single after hit single. ‘New Sensation’, ‘Devil Inside’, ‘Need You Tonight’, ‘Never Tear Us Apart’… the list goes on. It is a musical and cultural masterpiece. The album opens with ‘Guns In The Sky’, which vocalist Michael Hutchence belts out in a true eighties fashion. Hutchence flaunts his sex symbol status in ‘Need You Tonight’, before transitioning to the political poem that is ‘Mediate’. Meanwhile, infectious guitar riffs and a punchy drum give the album the funky kick (pun intended) that sets it apart from your average rock album.

Favourite track: ‘Mystify’ – the piano, the clicks, the vocals, and those lyrics: I need perfection. Everything about this song gets to me. When it comes on I just want to stop whatever I am doing and dance. It is so simple, yet so sexy.
